Six years after it premiered, Steven Universe is leaving the world of television much better than it found it. At the beginning of the series, Steven was uncertain about his identity and keenly aware of the ways in which everyone around him misses his deceased mother, Rose Quartz. In the Future finale, Steven finally comes to terms with himself and his lack of direction after saving the world. But what next? The final episodes deal with a lot of serious material, even more than usual.
Steven Universe , a show that has already been leading the way in LGBTQ representation for cartoons and animation, made history in July when it aired the first same-sex marriage proposal for the medium. When did you realize you wanted to do something like this and when did you realize you actually could do something like this? Basically, what was interesting to me about the arc of this whole experience was that I ended up in many conversations where it was made clear to me that this was not something that should be in G-rated content and that there was a limit on how much we could show these characters, how close these characters could be with each other. And it was a little bit like staring into the sun because I felt the toll it was taking on my personal mental health and I realized that that is what is happening to millions of children because when this is not in this content, that is what is being said to them. And this has changed.
